Prison for robbers who jumped in Allegheny River

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Two men have been sentenced to prison time for snatching a purse from an elderly woman and leading police on a winter chase that ended in the Allegheny River.

Twenty-three-year-old Shane Harty of Sharpsburg, and 20-year-old Chad Berry of Fineview, both pleaded guilty to robbery in August and were sentenced Monday. Harty will serve 4 1/2 to 10 years in prison and Berry will serve two to five years.

Police said that on Jan. 6, Berry grabbed a purse from 77-year-old woman in the parking lot of a grocery store in Shaler.

After a chase, police said the robbers abandoned their car with two flat tires and jumped into the cold waters of the Allegheny River. The men were treated for hypothermia before being jailed.
