In 2006 and 2007, the Cardinal Mooney football team finished the regular season undefeated and won the Associated Press poll crown.

It’s about to do it again.

Mooney (9-0), fresh off a dramatic 27-22 win over arch-rival Ursuline on Friday, secured 27 of a possible 30 first-place votes to claim the top spot in Division III in this week’s Ohio AP poll.

The Cardinals have won five poll titles overall, including back-to-back Division IV crowns in 2006-07.

Poland (8-1), which routed Beaver Local 40-6 on Friday, dropped one spot to No. 4 in Div. III. The Bulldogs’ lone loss was to second-ranked Steubenville.

Hubbard (8-1) and Salem (7-2), are ranked 11th and 12th, respectively.

The Eagles have won eight straight since an opening loss to Poland, while Salem is eyeing its first playoff berth in school history after last week’s win over Lakeview.

In Div. I, Warren Harding (5-3-1) is 13th, while Howland (8-1) and Canfield (8-1) are 11th and 13th, respectively, in Div. II.

The Cardinals will meet Poland on Friday at Dave Pavlansky Field.

Girard (9-0) is ranked fifth and Lakeview (6-3) 10th in Div. IV.

The Indians can secure their first unbeaten season with a win Friday against Liberty.

Campbell (6-3), which clinched a winning season by beating Newton Falls on Friday, is 13th.

Crestview (8-1) fell to ninth in Div. V following its first loss last Friday against Mineral Ridge. Ursuline (5-3, 15th) and East Palestine (7-2, 17th) also dropped in the polls following losses.

In Div. VI, McDonald (9-0) is ranked sixth and Warren JFK (7-2) jumped to ninth following Friday’s wins. Western Reserve (8-1) is 12th and Columbiana (7-2) 15th.

The final poll will be released Nov. 2.
