Boil-water order in Niles

NILES — A break in a waterline has caused a boil order to be issued for some city residents.

Those who live on Deforest Avenue between state Route 169 and Warren Avenue are asked to boil all water until further notice. Those residents in surrounding areas are not required to boil water.

A waterline in the Deforest Avenue area of Weathersfield Township burst around 5 p.m. Monday.

Academy nominations

YOUNGSTOWN — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles announced that all 17th Congressional District students who are seeking a nomination to one of the nation’s military academies must submit their final applications to his office no later than Monday.

Ryan will make nominations in December to the Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

A nomination is not required for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which accepts candidates based on their own selection process. A candidate interested in applying must contact the Coast Guard Academy directly.

Each applicant will have an interview with the district’s nomination committee Nov. 14, and a nominating breakfast will be in December.

Canfield leaf collection

CANFIELD — The township will have a trial leaf collection Nov. 9.

The program, through a grant from the Recycling Division of Mahoning County Green Team, will include the areas from U.S. Route 224 to Austintown Township and between Tippecanoe and South Raccoon roads.

Nov. 9 will be the only day the leaves are collected this year.

The leaves must be in paper bags or they won’t be collected.

Free bags will be made available at Canfield Township Hall, 21 South Broad Street.

Safety Awareness Night

BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield police and fire departments will host the 11th annual Safety Awareness Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the fire station, 774 state Route 7.

Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided. The Howland Fire Department will bring its smoke trailer so kids can practice getting out of a fire.

The Fowler Police Department will bring its canine officer to demonstrate how a dog is used in police work.

The Brookfield Optimist Club will provide pumpkins so that the children can carve them.

5th Ward town-hall event

YOUNGSTOWN — Councilman Paul Drennen is hosting a 5th Ward town-hall meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive.

Topics include housing demolition, crime, and parking and stop- sign ordinances.

All 5th Ward residents are invited to attend.

Benefit pasta dinner

STRUTHERS — A benefit pasta dinner to help a lifelong Mahoning Valley resident is scheduled for Sunday.

The community is asked to attend and help raise money for Joanne Bruno George, who suffers from kidney disease and is on dialysis. The event is from noon to 5 p.m. at the Embassy, 5030 Youngstown-Poland Road.

The event will feature live music, entertainment and door prizes as well as the meal. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Hampton Inn and Suites Canfield, Inner Circle Canfield, Burgan Real Estate Ltd., The Wrist Connection and the Manor Restaurant.

All proceeds go to the Bruno George family.
