WARREN — The Warren Police Department has been awarded $43,740 to pay officers to work overtime to reduce the number of fatal car accidents, speed-related crashes and alcohol-related crashes and increase seat-belt use now through next September.

The grant is a 4 percent increase over the previous year, when the department received $41,895. The amount the department received last fiscal year also was a 4 percent increase over its 2007-08 amount.

Funding for the High Visibility Enforcement Overtime Grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The money cannot be used to pay officers’ base salaries.

Halloween event for kids

YOUNGSTOWN — City police are combining safety and fun into one party on Halloween night.

Police Chief Jimmy Hughes and the Citizens Police will host a Halloween party from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Youngstown Police Department Training Center, 1639 Mahoning Ave.

All children age 4 through 12 are invited to attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be games, prizes, refreshments and a puppet show. McGruff the crime dog also will be in attendance.

Police are accepting donations such as hot dogs, buns, juice, soda, chips, candy and prizes.

Tree-planting party

YOUNGSTOWN — The public is invited to a tree-planting party courtesy of Treez Please.

The event will be at 8 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Interstate 680 and Midlothian Boulevard and will last until all 17 trees are planted. Volunteers are asked to bring a shovel and gloves.

In the spirit of the holiday, costumes are encouraged but not required for the planting.

The rain date for the event is Nov. 1.

Robbery suspect sought

BUTLER, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police are asking the public for help in apprehending a man accused of robbing a convenience store.

Police say a man robbed the Last Minit Mart on Perry Highway on Sunday. A report said the suspect is about 6 feet tall, weighing 165 pounds, with a beard and mustache and wearing dark- colored pants and a dark-colored long-sleeve shirt.

The man is identified in a report as Shawn Aaron Hobel, 27, of Ellwood City, Pa. Police advise that the suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous. He was last seen driving a 1988 multicolored Ford pickup truck.
