Poland, Canfield earn AAC wins


POLAND — With starting running back Luke Wollet sitting out with an injury, E.J. Kosec and Nick Heltzel picked up the slack for Poland in a 40-6 victory over Beaver Local on Friday.

Heltzel rushed for 79 yards and one touchdown, and Kosec had 69 yards and a score for the Bulldogs (8-1, 3-0 All-American Conference Red Tier), who clinched a tie for the Tier championship with their annual rivalry game against Canfield next week.

Darius Patton added an 18-yard run and 65-yard punt return for TDs, and Colin Reardon and John Medina also scored on the ground.

Beaver Local (0-9, 0-4) scored with two minutes left on a 6-yard pass from Jared Britt to Jarod Pirl.

Poland held a 302-136 edge in total yards.

Wollet reportedly had a foot injury.

Canfield 28, Niles 0

CANFIELD — Kyle Vaclav rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns to lead Canfield (8-1, 2-1 AAC Red).

Brett Cooper added 69 yards rushing and one score, and 19 yards passing and a scoring ross to Blake Jackson for the Cardinals.

Canfield held Niles (4-5, 1-3) to minus-9 yards rushing and 2 yards of total offense.

Girard 28, LaBrae 6

GIRARD — Landon Smith rushed for one touchdown and caught two scoring passes to lead the undefeated Indians (9-0, 5-0 AAC Blue).

The Indians, who were rated third in the Div. IV computer this week, got a 13-yard scoring run from Adam Charles to open the scoring.

After Smith ran for a 13-yard score, Charles hit him for touchdown completions of 8 and 50 yards.

Smith caught four balls from Charles for 97 yards.

The Vikings (3-6, 2-3) averted a shutout when Todd Collins ran it in from 5 yards away.

Howland 18, Liberty 0

HOWLAND — Howland’s defense held Liberty (4-5) to 73 total yards on 27 plays, and gave the offense a boost by scoring first with a safety.

Howland (8-1) was ranked fifth in the Div. II, Region 5 rankings received great senior leadership from Mike Mangiarelli who rushed for 123 yards on 21 attempts. Matt Preston rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown, and Chris McClearn rounded out the scoring with a 31-yard field goal.

Liberty was lead by Robert Smith-Harris who rushed for 11 yards, and Antonio Kinard who caught a 42 yard pass from Nick Mattocks.

Hubbard 35, Struthers 6

STRUTHERS — Dan Duvall rushed for 133 yards and scored a three touchdowns to lead Hubbard in an AAC White Tier game.

Duvall opened the scoring with a 1-yard run and added a 25-yard TD run in the second quarter. Later in the first quarter he caught a 47-yard pass for a touchdown from Matt Shelton.

Shelton was 9 of 17 for 157 yards and he also connected with Tommy Jackson on a 21-yard scoring strike in the third quarter for the Eagles (8-1, 4-0).

Keith Auman had 80 yards and Struthers’ (2-7,0-4) only touchdown, a 61-yard run in the first quarter.

Brookfield 13, Champion 6

BROOKFIELD — Denny Sulick’s 28-yard run with 4:26 remaining gave Brookfield the lead and the Warriors snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Jeremy Quinlan’s 22-yard pass to Vince Venzeio accounted for Brookfield’s (1-8, 1-4 AAC Blue) other points, while Travis Damron ran in from 32 yards for Champion (1-8, 0-5).

Damron rushed for 146 yards for the Golden Flashes.

Joe Kirila led Brookfield with 59 yards and Sulick added 31. Quinlan was 5 of 9 for 67 yards, and Venzeio caught four passes for 53 yards.
