Salem, Southeast capture sectional volleyball wins


BOARDMAN — Salem and Southeast each posted opening round wins Monday in the Division II volleyball sectional tournament at Boardman High.

Salem cruised past Alliance 25-13, 25-13 and 25-6 and will meet Crestwood in a sectional final on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Southeast defeated West Branch 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18 to advance to the sectional final on Wednesday where the Pirates will meet Poland at 5 p.m.

Amy Scullion led the way for the Quakers with four aces, 12 kills and one block, while Mariah Hallock added five kills and two blocks and Laura Brown had three aces, two kills and 18 assists.

West Branch featured Karli Kitzmiller with 14 points and 17 digs, while Michelle Sosnick had 15 assists and six blocks.

Stow district

STOW — Austintown Fitch and East each bowed out of play in the Division I sectional at Stow.

Fitch fell to Stow 25-15, 25-6 and 25-8, while East was defeated by Copley 25-11, 25-4 and 25-17.

Division III South Range 25-25-25, Newton Falls 19-6-12

SALEM — Patty Schuster had 18 points and eight aces, Heather Berry had seven kills, Toni Geffert had 12 assists and Aleah D’Amico had 14 points and five aces for South Range, which advanced to play top-seeded Springfield at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Salem High.

Destiny Prusky had 11 kills, four blocks and 10 digs for Newton Falls. Tori Milani had 12 digs, Missy Chick had eight assists and Lindsey Brockway had 10 points.

Waterloo 25-25-25, Badger 2-12-6

SALEM — No. 3 seed Waterloo (20-3) cruised past Badger (5-17) and advanced to play East Palestine Thursday at 6 p.m.

Girard 25-25-23-25, Lisbon 18-23-25-11

SALEM — Chelsea Guerrieri had 14 kills, 15 digs, eight points serving and three aces with two blocks; Lindsey Crown had 13 kills and three blocks, Bryanna Jay had 10 kills and one block and Alex Doran had 17 assists, 10 points serving and five aces for Girard (16-7) in the Div. III sectional semifinal.

The Indians will play Ursuline on Wednesday at 7:30.

Division IV Leetonia 21-26-25-25, Heartland 25-24-18-13

LISBON — Leetonia won behind 15 points each from Ashlee Coontz and Clarissa Perkins while Lauren Ketterman had 13 kills and Ashlee Roselle 18 blocks. Sarah Easley had 14 points and Kimberly Stearns 10 points and 22 kills.

Lordstown 25-25-25, Yo. Christian 16-12-17

Keeley Chafee had 16 points with six aces to lead No. 3 seed Lordstown. Chelsea Moherman had 18 assists and 56 sets and Kaitlynne Cassidy seven pints and two blocks. Youngstown Christian was led by Summer Lucky with seven points and 16 digs.

Wellsville 25-25-25, East Canton 8-7-12

Noelle Amato led Wellsville with 19 points, 20 assists and eight sets while Shantae Dillard added 12 points and 11 kills.
