Documentary recalls horror host Ghoulardi

KENT — Those who grew up in Northeast Ohio in the 1960s might remember Ghoulardi.

Played by Ernie Anderson, the character was a Cleveland counter-culture media celebrity who hosted WJW-TV’s late-night horror movies from 1963 to 1966.

Western Reserve PBS has produced a documentary entitled “Turn Blue: The Short Life of Ghoulardi” that will premiere at 9 p.m. Oct. 27 on the TV station. It will be repeated at 2 a.m. Oct. 28, and 4 p.m. Oct. 31.

“Turn Blue” is the work of producer/director Phil Hoffman, who teaches radio and television courses at the University of Akron. It is the latest in a series of local history productions that Hoffman has created in cooperation with Western Reserve Public Media.

Anderson was working as an announcer at WJW when the station asked him to don a fright wig and serve as the host of a late-night horror movie series. Ghoulardi was born. Within just a few short weeks, Clevelanders were shouting phrases from the show, including “knif,” “Oxnard” and “blue.” Anderson’s Ghoulardi would begin a local TV tradition that would continue with Hoolihan, and Big Chuck and Little John.

The upgrades include 3-D viewing capability.

The first live-action digital 3-D film, “U2 3D” is a unique cinematic experience that places viewers within the pulsing energy of a stadium concert given by one of the world’s most well-known bands.

U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
