big ten roundup Saturday’s other games

No. 11 Iowa 20, Wisconsin 10

MADISON, Wis. — No. 11 Iowa needed a second-half road rally to keep its perfect season alive, coming back to beat Wisconsin. Trailing by a touchdown at halftime, the Hawkeyes (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten) began the third quarter by turning an interception into a tying touchdown pass from quarterback Ricky Stanzi to tight end Tony Moeaki. Iowa took the lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Adam Robinson early in the fourth quarter, and the Hawkeyes’ defense kept the Badgers scoreless in the second half. After appearing vulnerable to the run early on, Iowa’s defense clamped down on Wisconsin (5-2, 2-2) and running back John Clay, who might have been slowed by a second-quarter leg injury after a big first quarter. Clay finished the game with 75 yards rushing and Scott Tolzien threw three interceptions. Stanzi was 17 of 23 for 218 yards and a touchdown. Mooney High graduate Derrell Johnson-Koulianos caught eight passes for 113 yards.

Michigan St. 24, Northwestern 14

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Kirk Cousins threw two touchdown passes to Blair White in the third quarter to spark Michigan State. The Spartans (4-3, 3-1 Big Ten) trailed 7-0 at halftime but rallied against the Wildcats(4-3, 1-2). Northwestern had won three consecutive Big Ten road games and two straight in East Lansing. But the Cousins-to-White connection wore down the Wildcats. Cousins hit a wide-open White for a 47-yard touchdown strike to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead with 5:13 left in the third quarter. White finished with 12 catches for 186 yards and two TDs. Cousins was 21 of 31 for 281 yards. Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka completed 34 of 47 passes for 291 yards and two TDs. Wildcats receiver Zeke Markshausen had 16 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Michigan 63, Delaware State 6

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan had a record-breaking day. The Wolverines (5-2) set team marks with 442 yards in the first half and 727 total. They matched a school record with a 28-point first quarter and led 49-3 with their second-highest score by halftime. The Hornets (1-4) didn’t come close to repeating Appalachian State’s upset in 2007 at the Big House, but the second-tier program got paid $550,000 to forfeit a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game to give Michigan a tuneup. Quarterback Tate Forcier started, a week after having a concussion, and led the Wolverines to a TD on his only drive and left the game healthy. Denard Robinson threw two touchdown passes on just four attempts and fumbled. Michigan also used its third-, fourth- and fifth-string quarterbacks. Forcier played after being listed as questionable, but was only on the field for one drive. He completed both his passes for 39 yards. Michigan didn’t ask any of its QBs to throw more than nine passes, choosing to hand the ball off early and often, perhaps to avoid making the score even more lopsided against the overmatched Football Championship Subdivision team. The Wolverines rested their top two running backs — Carlos Brown because of a concussion and Brandon Minor who has an ankle injury — and some inexperienced players took advantage. Vincent Smith ran for a career-high 166 yards and a touchdown. Michael Cox had 82 yards rushing and two scores. Michael Shaw ran for 73 yards and a TD. Michigan had two brothers score in their highest-scoring game since scoring 63 points against Minnesota in 1992.

Indiana 27, Illinois 14

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Ben Chappell threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns, both career highs, leading Indiana. The victory ended Indiana’s two-game losing streak in the series, a three-game losing streak overall and a five-game skid in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers (4-3, 1-2) need two wins in their final five games to become bowl-eligible.
