Youngstown Christian wins in OT; East, Fitch defeated


SOUTHINGTON — Spencer Reed’s extra-point kick in overtime after quarterback John Pecchia scored a touchdown from the 2-yard line lifted the Youngstown Christian High football team to Friday’s 42-41 win over Southington.

Southington had taken a 41-35 lead in overtime on Jim Rasey’s 15-yard TD dash, but the Wildcats’ conversion pass attempt failed.

Youngstown Christian tied it at 35-35 in regulation on Pecchia’s 45-yard TD pass to Victor Shaw and Reed’s placement with 2:37 left.

The Eagles took it to overtime when Erik French made a key interception with 40 seconds left after Southington had driven to the Eagles’ 35-yard line.

Pecchia completed 24 of 37 passes for 384 yards and five touchdowns while Shaw caught seven passes for 118 yards and three TDs.

Rasey finished with 376 yards rushing in 49 carries and six TDs to lead Southington (3-4).

Canton Cent. Cath. 22, East 20

CANTON — East quarterback Shawn Haywood passed for 217 yards for the Panthers (2-6).

The Panthers scored fourth-quarter touchdowns when Tyrell Riddle blocked a punt and Michael Thomas caught a 42-yard touchdown with 1:02 remaining. The Crusaders sacked Haywood on the conversion attempt.

Warren JFK 19, St. Thomas Aquinas 0

WARREN — Anthony Angelo threw for two TDs and ran for another to lead the Eagles (6-2), which entered the game sixth in the Division VI Region 21 computer ratings.

Angelo was 5-of-9 passing for 37 yards and carried 12 times for 24 yards.

Matt Hohman led Aquinas (2-6) with 13 carries for 74 yards and Zack Hart had seven catches for 52 yards.

Massillon Perry 31, Fitch 14

MASSILLON — Caleb Laps rushed 36 times for 277 yards and four touchdowns to lead Perry (3-5, 1-4 Federal League).

Laps scored on runs of 3, 57, 30 and 81 yards.

Jon Ballard rushed 15 times for 118 yards and completed nine of 19 passes for 108 yards for the Falcons (5-3, 2-3).

Fitch took a 6-3 lead in the first quarter when Bruce Reed had a 25-yard touchdown run but Perry then scored the next 21 straight points.

Fitch pulled to within 10 points when Ballard hit Reed with a 31-yard scoring aerial.

Minerva 36, West Branch 9

BELOIT — D.J. Marrah threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two.

Marrah accounted for 285 yards passing (17 of 31) and 85 rushing for the Lions (6-2, 3-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).

Jeremy Fick caught three passes for 121 yards, including a 74-yarder for a TD in the fourth quarter.

Mark Smith led West Branch (3-5, 2-3) with 93 yards rushing and a touchdown on 19 carries. Quarterback Mark Smith was 15 of 32 for 190 yards.

Field 16, Southeast 13

MOGADORE — Noah Kainrad completed 5 of 7 passes for 143 yards and a TD and ran six times for 53 yards to lead Southeast (1-7, 1-4) in a Portage Trail Conference loss.

Garrett Lavigna had a 64-yard TD catch with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter.

Charles Snyder ran 15 times for 105 yards to lead Field (7-1, 5-0).

Beaver Falls 49, Mohawk 7

MESSEMER, Pa. — Admire Carter and Cody Cook led Beaver Falls to its eighth consective victory of the season.

Carter got Beaver Falls on the board with a 59 yard punt return late in the first quarter, but that was just the beginning.

Carter rushed for an 81 yard touchdown and led all Falls receivers with 3 catches for 98 yards and a score.

Cody Cook rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback John Beatty was the lone scorer for Mohawk (3-4) with a 1-yard run. Colin Bredl led Mohawk’s ground game with 83 yards.
