United Nations Day celebration planned

YOUNGSTOWN — The United Nations Association of the United States of America, Youngstown Area Chapter, has planned an annual United Nations Day Celebration to take place Thursday at Park Vista. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6, followed by a program at 7.

The featured speaker will be Staughton Lynd, scholar, advocate, educator and author.

Card party at church

BOARDMAN —The Ladies Guild of St. Charles Parish will sponsor a card and bingo party from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church social hall on Westview Drive. Admission is $5. Tickets will be available at the door and will include lunch and refreshments. There will be door prizes, raffles and a 50-50 drawing.

Registration required for railroad seminar

DARLINGTON, Pa. — An annual Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Reformed Presbyterian Church, one block behind One Stop Shopper in Darlington.

On the agenda will be programs about the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad in Butler County, the Pittsburgh Harmony Butler and New Castle Railway, and the Youngstown and Southern Railroad. PowerPoint programs will be by Wayne A. Cole.

College/Career Day at Baptist Church

YOUNGSTOWN — The Sunday school department of New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will sponsor a College/Career Day from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 25. The guest speaker will be Dr. Derrick Jackson of Jackson Podiatry Clinic.

A representative will display information concerning admission to Eastern Gateway Community College, Kent State University, Job Corps, National College, University of Phoenix, Walsh College, Westminster, Malone, Central State and Youngstown State University.

Pink Tie Affair benefits foundation

AUSTINTOWN — A Way With Words Foundation was the recipient of more than $6,000 raised during the Pink Tie Affair to Remember on Oct. 4 at the Southern Park Mall.

The evening included wine, food, dancing to a live orchestra, and Chinese, silent and live auctions.

On display were entries created by those touched by cancer for the Art Bra Contest.

Funds from the event will support the ROcCK Children’s Choir upcoming Kids Helping Kids tour and support breast cancer patients, ensuring they receive follow-up mammograms and aid in getting to and from treatments.

Brenda Rider, founder of A Way With Words, said the success of the event was due to the support of generous guests, sponsors, those who donated auction items, and the auctioneers.

Model railroad association schedules open house

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Model Railroad Association has planned an open house for the weekends of Nov. 7 and 8, 14 and 15 and Dec. 5 and 6, at the club on Raccoon Road at Four Mile Run Road, Austintown. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m. each of the six days.

The association is one of the few clubs that has two complete displays, “O” scale and smaller “HO” scale layouts, each featuring more than 100 scale miles of track.

A courtesy donation of $3 per person is requested. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Aromatherapy workshop at Villa Maria center

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will be the setting for a new workshop on “Aromatherapy: Essential Oils; Common Scents,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7.

The session will provide an overview of essential oils and their therapeutic value when used in every day life. Participants are to take a plastic pint container with a lid.
