Award recipient to be honored

LIBERTY — Alan Mirkin is the 2009 recipient of the Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award and the K’far Silver Scholarship Plaque, according to an announcement from the Zionist Organization of America, Youngstown Zionist District.
Mirkin will be honored at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Temple El Emeth for his devotion to Israel, Zionism and community service. The public is invited.
Mirkin was born and raised in Youngstown. He graduated from The Rayen School and obtained a bachelor of arts degree in accounting from Ohio University. After graduation, he worked at Ernst and Ernst, Youngstown office. He received his certified public accounting certificate in 1980 and became chief financial officer of Allen’s Drugtown, a local chain of seven retail drugstores.
In 1987, he assumed the position of president of the drugstore chain. Eventually the retail division was sold to Rite-Aid and Mirkin became president of Allen’s Pharma-serve Inc., an institutional and long-term care pharmacy, a position he presently has.
Mirkin has been very active in Jewish communal affairs. He served as president of the Jewish Community Center, was treasurer for Akiva Academy, the Jewish Day School, vice president of Temple El Emeth and has been the recipient of the Abe Harshman Young Leadership Award from the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation in 1993. He presently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation for which he is immediate past president.
Mirkin has also served the general community, having successfully completed the Leadership Youngstown Program. He served on the financial board of the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and as a board member of the Western Reserve Health Foundation.
Mirkin and his wife, Lori, have three children.
