Symphony prepares program for blind
GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Greenville Symphony Society will present a program for blind and visually impaired students Oct. 24 at Thiel College’s Passavant Center.
Students of the Mercer/Lawrence County Keystone Blind Association will be the guests of the orchestra that day.
During the afternoon rehearsal, the students will receive a special music-education experience as they are seated on stage to listen to the various sections of the orchestra tune for the evening’s concert.
After the first portion of the rehearsal, a number of musicians will create interactive one-on-one stations of the four families of instruments: string, woodwind, brass and percussion.
The students will visit each station to hear, touch and compare, and play the instruments.
Later, Music Director/Conductor Michael Gelfand will provide basic instruction on conducting and offer information on music careers.
At 8 p.m., the students will return for the evening performance and will be recognized before the opening number. The student programs have been prepared in Braille with a brief synopsis of “Peter and the Wolf,” by Prokofiev. All others attending the concert receive a Braille program insert of the musical selections for awareness education.
Concertgoers also may deposit eyeglasses for recycling in the Lions Club collection box for one of their many sight programs.
