Dow moves above 10,000 mark, if ever so briefly

The Dow Jones industrial average crossed 10,000 today for the first time in a year.

“It’s a milestone to be sure,” said David Benett, senior vice president for the Butler Wick division of Stifel Nicolaus in Canfield.

He added, however, that concerns remain for the economy. Unemployment, for example, remains high because companies have been staying profitable but cutting jobs.

The Dow rose as high as 10,001.58 this afternoon but quicky retreated under the five-digit barrier. The Dow had reached a 12-year low of 6,547.05 on March 9.
