Generali ladies
LINZ, Austria — Fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro eased past Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Generali Ladies. The 34th-ranked Spaniard had three breaks in the opening set and added four more in the second at the indoor Intersport Arena. Urszula Radwanska of Poland saved two set points in the opening set before defeating Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 7-6 (6), 6-1. Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic defeated Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-1, 6-4. Kvitova broke Petkovic three times in the opening set and converted her first match point. Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania also advanced after stopping Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Japan Open
OSAKA, Japan — Fifth-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel was upset 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Sania Mirza of India in the first round of the Japan Women’s Open. Fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy beat Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 7-5, 6-2. Schiavone had five aces against the unseeded Kremer at Ustubo Tennis Center. Seventh-seeded Melinda Czink of Hungary beat Ryoko Fuda of Japan 6-4, 6-4, and Maria Kirilenko of Russia retired because of a sore left knee after losing the first set to Viktoriya Kutuzova of Ukraine 6-2.
Shanghai Masters
SHANGHAI — James Blake rallied to defeat Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the first round of the Shanghai Masters. The American was broken early in the first set but won the second when Karlovic sent a forehand wide in the tiebreaker. “I didn’t have very good momentum at the start,” said Blake, who recently started working with coach Kelly Jones. “The third set, I liked the way, when I did get my racket on it, how I was playing.” Despite serving 27 aces in the match, Karlovic allowed Blake to break serve in the third and ninth games of the third set. Karlovic, who holds the record for serving 78 aces in a match during a five-set loss to Radek Stepanek in the Davis Cup semifinals last month, double-faulted on the final point. Spanish players Tommy Robredo and David Ferrer advanced to the second round with straight-set wins. The 14th-seeded Robredo, who won 29 of 31 points on his first serve and never faced a break point, easily beat French qualifier Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-4. Ferrer topped Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3. Tenth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile moved into the second round after Mischa Zverev of Germany retired with an injured right wrist with the score 7-5, 6-7 (0), 2-2.Former Grand Slam champion Marat Safin, coming off of a quarterfinal showing at Beijing last week, beat Chinese wild-card Gong Maoxin 6-4, 6-4.
