Avalanche 4, Bruins 3

BOSTON — David Jones scored a short-handed goal to lift Colorado over Boston. Marek Svatos had a tiebreaking, power-play goal midway into the second period. Milan Hejduk and Scott Hannan also scored for the Avalanche (3-1-1). Craig Anderson made 29 saves for Colorado. Michael Ryder, Mark Recchi and Blake Wheeler each scored for Boston (2-3), which closed its season-opening homestand.

Kings 2, Islanders 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Jon Quick made 28 saves and Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty scored. Quick, who has played every minute in the Kings’ first five games of the season, was rarely tested. Los Angeles has won four straight following a season-opening, 6-3 loss to Phoenix. Quick fell 1:55 short of his fifth NHL shutout when Matt Moulson scored his second goal of the season. New York (0-1-3) is still seeking its first win after starting the season with three overtime losses, two by shootout. Martin Biron made 20 saves and is one win away from 200 in the NHL.

Rangers 7, Maple Leafs 2

NEW YORK — Defenseman Dan Girardi and Sean Avery both scored two goals and the Rangers beat the Maple Leafs for their fifth straight victory. Wade Redden had a goal and two assists, and Ryan Callahan, and Marian Gaborik also scored for the Rangers, undefeated since a season-opening loss at Pittsburgh. New York has also won seven consecutive at home, dating to last season. Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves for his fourth victory. Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Drury, Artem Anisimov and Vinny Prospal all had two assists for the Rangers, who scored four goals in the third period. Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jason Blake tallied for the Maple Leafs (0-4-1), who along with the New York Islanders are the NHL’s only winless teams.

Devils 3, Capitals 2, SO

WASHINGTON — Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner scored in the shootout, New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur stopped shootout attempts by Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin and the Devils beat the Capitals for their third straight victory. Nicklas Backstrom tallied for the Capitals in the shootout, but Brodeur used his left arm to block Semin’s drive and kicked away Ovechkin’s shot at the left post. Brian Rolston and David Clarkson tallied in regulation for the Devils.

Lightning 3, Panthers 2

TAMPA, Fla. — Ryan Malone’s rebound goal in the third period gave the Lightning a victory over the Panthers. Stamkos and Martin St. Louis had the other Lightning goals. Radek Dvorak and Nathan Horton scored for the Panthers, who have lost four in a row.
