Late Dolphins rally pins 31-27 loss on Jets

MIAMI (AP) — Running back Ronnie Brown scored on a 2-yard keeper up the middle in the wildcat formation with 6 seconds left, and the Miami Dolphins came from behind three times in the fourth quarter to beat the New York Jets 31-27 on Monday night.

Newcomer Braylon Edwards gave the Jets a big boost, as did two fake punts.

But Miami gained 110 yards with the wildcat, which was instrumental in three scoring drives.

Starting from their own 30 with 5:05 left and trailing 27-24, Miami drove 70 yards in 13 plays for the winning score. The march included four wildcat plays for 25 yards.

The Dolphins (2-3) climbed back into the AFC East race after losing their first three games.

The Jets (3-2) fell into a tie with New England for first place and have lost two straight.

Dolphins linebacker Jason Taylor left the game with a right shoulder injury but returned later in the fourth quarter.

Taylor walked to the locker room in the final quarter holding his hands and grimacing. The 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year had fallen awkwardly after trying to sack Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The team said he had a right shoulder injury and his return was questionable. Taylor returned to the sideline and received treatment before going back in the game.

Jets punter Steve Weatherford ran 26 yards on the first fake, shaking Cameron Wake and scampering down the sideline to setup a 3-yard touchdown catch by Edwards.

Brad Smith (Chaney High) took a direct snap for a 12-yard gain and a first down on a second-quarter fake leading to the first of two field goals by Jay Feely, who connected from 40 and 43 yards. Feely’s kicks gave him a streak of 22 straight, tying Pat Leahy’s franchise record.

The Dolphins ran the wildcat five straight times in a third-quarter drive, giving themselves a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line heading to the fourth quarter.

This game was full of deception.

Brown threw his first pass of the season out of the wildcat package for a 21-yard gain to Anthony Fasano, with Miami’s do-it-all running back rolling left and throwing left-handed to hit the tight end cutting across the middle.

Brown ended the opening drive a 1-yard TD run, and Dan Carpenter made a 35-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining in the first quarter to put Miami in front 10-7.

The Jets got a big boost from their newest piece.

Edwards, who was acquired from Cleveland for two draft choices and two players last week, had two catches for 20 yards in the half and even got a hug from Sanchez on the sideline after the touchdown.

Edwards also caught a 17-yard pass in New York’s scoring drive in the second quarter.

The Dolphins (1-3) want to climb back into the AFC East race and prove last season’s division title wasn’t a fluke.
