BOARDMAN — Second-seeded Chelsea Ross of Warren JFK upset top-seeded Gabrielle Brocker of Poland to win the Division II sectional singles title on Saturday.
It was the second straight year Brocker has finished second at the tournament. Ross was a member of JFK’s sectional runner-up doubles team last season.
Poland’s Danielle Mullis, who finished third in doubles last year, placed third in singles competition and JFK’s Gabby Lee, who was fourth in doubles last fall, was fourth.
Both players were unseeded.
All four singles players had already earned berths in next week’s district tournament in Canton.
Saturday’s matches were for seeding purposes only.
Mooney’s second-seeded doubles team of Jaclyn DiDomenico and Jordan Stefko defeated Poland’s top-seeded duo of Courtney Benson and Amy Noll in the final to capture the sectional crown. DiDomenico won a sectional doubles title last fall with Allie St. George.
Third-seeded Laurencia Lee and Claudia Ricotti of Warren JFK placed third by defeating teammates Maddie Jones and Mallory Kohut, who were unseeded entering the tournament.
Those four teams also move on to district competition.
In Division I, third-seeded Carolyn Jesko of Boardman lost to top-seeded Trisha Conlan of Massillon Jackson in the final, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to place second.
Jesko was a state doubles qualifier last year while playing with her older sister Ann. They finished second at the sectional tournament.
Jesko was the only local singles player to advance, but Canfield’s doubles team of Gabrielle Brant and Paige Zwicker finished third to qualify for next week’s district tournament at Oberlin College.
Brant and Zwicker lost their semifinal match to eventual champion Revere. The Cardinals then beat GlenOak in the consolation final.
