Unbeaten Cardinal Mooney rolls over Benedictine, 42-7

BEDFORD — Senior Karrington Griffin rushed 11 times for 100 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cardinal Mooney High football team to a dominating 42-0 win over Cleveland Benedictine on Saturday.

Senior Ray Vinopal scored on a 15-yard fumble return and a 62-yard punt return as the Cardinals (7-0) rolled up a 42-0 halftime lead.

Mooney entered the game ranked first in the Division III Associated Press poll and first in the Region 9 computer rankings.

Braylon Heard scored on a 24-yard TD run and a 25-yard fumble return. QB Alex Zordich had Mooney’s first TD on a 1-yard sneak. Dan Piascik had a 6-yard TD run with two minutes left in the game to avoid the shutout for Benedictine (1-6).

Warren JFK 34, Ash. Edgewood 7

ASHTABULA — Jim Coates ran 15 times for 114 yards and a TD as JFK (5-2) rolled up a 20-0 first quarter lead en route to victory.

Anthony Angelo added 87 yards rushing and a touchdown and threw for 95 yards and a TD for the Eagles, who entered the game eighth in the Division VI, Region 21 computer ratings. Nate Marsico had 79 yards rushing and two TDs.

Devon Anderson rushed eight times for 68 yards to lead Edgewood (4-3).

Cle. St. Ignatius 10, Warren Harding 7

WARREN — The Raiders (4-2-1) took a 7-0 first quarter lead on a 19-yard TD pass from Jordan Miller to Edward Killingsworth but Ignatius rallied with 10 points in the second quarter and held on.

Miller threw for 173 yards, including two to Killingsworth for 64 yards. Ignatius (7-0) is first in the Division I AP poll. The Raiders were fifth in the Region 1 computer rankings and the Wildcats first.

Canfield 37, Beaver Local 7

LISBON — Vince Gelonese’s 16-yard interception return ignited the Cardinals (6-1, 1-1 All-American Conference Red Tier) on Friday. Jon Rogers rushed for touchdowns covering 23 and 1 yards. Also scoring on runs were Brett Cooper (6 yards) and Blake Fisher (47 yards). Billy Fisher booted a 35-yard field goal.

For the Beavers (0-7), Evan Schneider threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jared Britt in the fourth quarter.
