DETROIT — Thomas Holmstrom broke a tie with a power-play goal with 6:53 left. Ville Leino and Jason Williams also scored for Detroit, Valtteri Filppula had two assists, and Chris Osgood made 21 saves. Matt Bradley and Brendan Morrison scored for Washington, and Jose Theodore stopped 34 shots.
With Mike Green in the penalty box for hooking, Holmstrom fired a shot from the right circle past Theodore after taking a pass from Pavel Datsyuk.
Ducks 3, Flyers 2, SO
PHILADELPHIA — Teemu Selanne scored the only goal in a shootout, and had two goals in regulation to lift Anaheim. Selanne scored twice in third, including the tying goal with only 16 seconds left. He beat Flyers goalie Ray Emery from the post to send the game into overtime. Chris Pronger scored his first goal with the Flyers after spending three years in Anaheim and helping the Ducks win the 2007 Stanley Cup title. Mike Richards also scored his NHL-best seventh goal of the season. When the Ducks didn’t feel they could sign Pronger to an extension at the end of this season, they dealt the intimidating defenseman to the Flyers in June.
Devils 3, Panthers 2
SUNRISE, Fla. — David Clarkson scored a power-play goal with 3:35 left to give New Jersey a victory over Florida. Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist, Rob Niedermayer also scored and Brian Rolston had two assists for New Jersey. The Devils have the first two games of a three-game trip to even their record at 2-2. Rostislav Olesz and Stephen Weiss scored for Florida in the Panthers’ first game at BankAtlantic Center this season. The Panthers (1-3) opened the season with two games against Chicago in Finland and were the designated home team for the second. Martin Brodeur stopped 19 shots to improve to 33-12-7 against Florida.
Senators 4, Thrashers 2
OTTAWA — Mike Fisher assisted on Alex Kovalev’s first-period goal and added a power-play goal in the second, leading Ottawa over Atlanta. Fisher, who scored 32 seconds into overtime Thursday night a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders, restored Ottawa’s lead 3:44 into the second when he put a backhander past Ondrej Pavelec.Kovalev scored his first Senators goal 43 seconds in, and Jarkko Ruutu added Ottawa’s second goal 1:42 later to open up a 2-0 lead 2:25 into the game. Chris Neil also scored, and Brian Elliott made 27 saves in his first start of the season for Ottawa (3-1).
Bruins 4, Islanders 3, SO
BOSTON — Blake Wheeler and Marc Savard scored in the shootout after the Boston Bruins rallied for three goals in the final 8:01 of regulation to beat New York. Jon Sim, Radek Martinek and John Tavares scored second-period goals for the Islanders, who were in position for the franchise’s first shutout in Boston. Boston, playing its longest homestand to open a season, improved to 2-3-0. The Islanders fell to 0-0-3. They lost their opener in a shootout and their second in overtime.
Lightning 5, Hurricanes 2
TAMPA, Fla. — Ryan Malone had three goals, including a go-ahead score midway through the third period. Malone made it 3-2 from the slot with 9:14 to play after receiving a nifty pass from Martin St. Louis. After Steve Downie extended the Tampa Bay advantage to 4-2 on a power-play goal at the 13-minute mark, Malone completed his hat trick on an empty-netter with 1:16 remaining. Paul Ranger also scored for the Lightning, who stopped a 12-game losing streak — including four losses in overtime or a shootout — dating to last season. Carolina got goals from Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour.
