Man charged in robbery

WARREN — Police have arrested a man they say robbed the First Place Bank branch in the Elm Road Plaza Friday morning.

Sgt. Dan Mason said Saturday that Joe Rien, 41, of 246 Washington St., N.W., has been charged with aggravated robbery.

He is being held without bond pending arraignment next week.

The robber did not try to cover his face, and authorities were able to get photographs of him.

Mason said the courts won’t be open until Tuesday because of the observance of Columbus Day.

Earth Science Week

YOUNGSTOWN —This week has been designated Earth Science Week statewide by Gov. Ted Strickland.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the statewide declaration is in conjunction with National Earth Science Week. The week is sponsored by the American Geological Survey.

In an effort to raise awareness on the subject, Strickland is encouraging state science teachers to utilize lessons and activities associated with earth science.
