Campbell’s Bayuk sparks memories

Campbell’s Bayuk sparks memories

Fanfare:

I enjoyed the [Oct. 2] story on Campbell High football coach Jeff Bayuk.

I was a senior during his first season at Hubbard and watched as he transformed the program. It was a wonderful ride I still cherish to this day. One of the few things I kept from that season was a note he left each team member as we prepared for our final game. It went like this:

“One more week together, one last time.

One last step that we have to climb.

The season’s been a dream, the end is drawing near

But the measure of your character has become quite clear.

How hard it must have been for you, how hard you must have tried.

But you just would not quit and your spirit never died.

This is your last chance, will you answer the calls?

Do you dare to be champions by beating Newton Falls?

This week is so important. This week can tell all.

How the Eagles rose from the depths and now are standing tall.

You’ve done so much for Hubbard, more than you’ll ever know.

You’ll always be remembered, no matter where you go.

The whole town learned from you about the grit it takes to win.

They’ll say it started in ‘91 and you’ll just turn and grin.

Be the history makers — Let’s get it done.”

I will always cherish that season.
