COLUMBUS — Scott Panchik scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:10 to play to help the top-ranked Raiders escape with an Ohio Athletic Conference victory. Panchick’s score capped a 48-yard scoring drive that was started when defensive end Joe Millings forced a fumble on a high snap to Capital quarterback Marty Assmann that senior defensive lineman Lambert Budzinski fell on. Quarterback Kurt Rocco completed a pair of passes, 24 yards to Panchik and 17 yards to A.J. Claycomb. Rocco went 21-for-31 for 314 yards and a pair of scores as he led an offense that out-gained Capital, 407-378. Capital signal caller Marty Assmann 17-of-31 for 249 yards and two scores. Rocco’s two touchdowns went to Cecil Shorts who had a game-high nine catches for 91 yards, and tight end Kyle Miller which was a 36-yarder with 8:17 to go that tied the score at 21-21.
Westminster 49, Waynesburg 42 OT
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Titans (2-4, 1-2 Presidents Athletic Conference) snapped a six-game losing streak against Waynesburg (3-2, 0-2 PAC). Westminster junior linebacker Cory Meeker intercepted a Brad Dawson pass on the 1-yard line to clinch the win after Waynesburg faced a third-down-and-goal situation on the Titans’ 8-yard line. The Titans got the ball first in overtime and scored on their second play when sophomore quarterback Shawn Lehocky took a shotgun snap and rushed 15 yards for a touchdown. Overall, the game saw 1,115 yards of total offense by both teams (Westminster had 562 to Waynesburg’s 553), six tie scores and five lead changes. Lehocky, who came off the bench in the second quarter, led the Titans with a career-high rushing 112 yards on 14 attempts and two touchdowns. He also completed 16 of 25 passes for a career-high 235 yards and three touchdowns, accounting for five of Westminster’s seven touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jon Gubish broke the school record for receptions in a game as he snared 14 passes for a career-high 213 yards with two touchdowns. Other notables for Westminster included starting quarterback Kevin Franz completing 10 of 16 passes for 126 yards, while senior tailback Nick McKolosky ran 21 times for 57 yards and two touchdowns. On the other side of the ledger, Dawson led Waynesburg with 434 yards on 20-of-37 passing for three touchdowns and one interception. Running back Billy Becker ran 17 times for 83 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Josh Fisher caught eight passes for 136 yards.
Bethany 42, Thiel 21
BETHANY, W.Va. — Sophomore RB Eric Walker scored four touchdowns and sophomore QB Chad Smith and senior WR Matt Cruse each set records for Bethany. The Homecoming triumph improved BC to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the PAC, while the Tomcats fall to 2-4 and 1-2. It was a solid day in all phases for Bethany, whose 583 yards of total offense was their highest since the 2007 season finale at Washington & Jefferson. Smith completed 37 passes in 48 attempts for 373 yards and two scores. The 37 completions set a new Bethany single-game record and the 373 yards was the fifth-highest. Cruse was the top target on the day, hauling in 12 passes for 186 yards and one touchdown. Already the school’s all-time TD reception leader (23), his huge effort Saturday gives him 2,276 receiving yards for his career, eclipsing the previous Bethany record of 2,141 set by T.J. Parker. He also has 153 catches to rank second behind only Parker’s 175.
Geneva 34, Grove City 17
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Grove City (2-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but Geneva (4-1) took control of the game with 20 unanswered points in the second half. Grove City took a 7-0 lead with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter as senior quarterback Andrew DiDonato fired a 33-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Luke O’Hara (New Castle, Pa./Shenango). The touchdown came two plays after a shanked punt gave Grove City possession at the Geneva 45. The Wolverines doubled the lead with 2:17 left as DiDonato tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tailback Blaine Miller. That capped a seven-play, 69-yard drive. DiDonato finished 20 of 35 passing for 200 yards. O’Hara caught six passes for 89 yards while Miller had five catches for 31 yards. Miller also ran for 40 yards on 10 attempts. Sophomore wide receiver Will McCoy pulled in five passes for 51 yards. Geneva cut Grove City’s lead to 14-7 with 10:09 left in the half on an 8-yard run by Matt Barge. Later in the period, Geneva tied the game on Matt Dean’s one-yard plunge into the end zone. However, Grove City reclaimed the lead on the final play of the first half as junior kicker Craig Bicehouse kicked a 37-yard field goal. On the previous play, Bicehouse missed a 42-yard attempt but Geneva jumped offside, giving Bicehouse a second opportunity. Geneva took its first lead of the game at the 9:26 mark of the third quarter on Gerard Muschette’s four-yard touchdown run. Early in the fourth quarter, Grove City drove to the Geneva 9. The drive stalled though, and Geneva blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt. Geneva’s Adam Rose eventually received a lateral after the scramble for the football and returned the block 74 yards to the Grove City 6. After a Grove City penalty, Muschette’s three-yard touchdown extended the lead to 27-17. Muschette added a seven-yard touchdown run with 6:26 left to close the scoring. Muschette finished with 219 yards rushing on 17 carries. Geneva outgained Grove City 448-305 and held a 37:05-22:55 edge in time of possession. Geneva quarterback David Girardi threw for 178 yards on 13-of-18 accuracy. Sophomore linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge) recorded a team-high 14 tackles for Grove City. Ferguson also had 1.5 quarterback sacks. Senior defensive tackle Tony Clark and sophomore linebacker Vince Angelo both had sacks. Angelo also forced a fumble. Sophomore linebacker Marc Shamley (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle) had nine tackles and a half-sack. Saturday’s game does not count in the PAC standings due to Geneva’s provisional membership status in NCAA Division III.
