Flu cases at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University reported two student cases of Type A influenza Friday.

Type A is an indicator of the H1N1 virus, but students aren’t tested for H1N1 unless they are hospitalized, said YSU spokesman Ron Cole. Hospitalization wasn’t required in these cases, he said.

YSU had one earlier case of Type A influenza at the beginning of the semester, he said, noting that student wasn’t hospitalized either.

The university follows the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for isolating students ill with the flu until their symptoms clear, he said.

Two of the three students affected live in campus housing. The third lives in an apartment near campus, he said.

Mathews bond forums

VIENNA — Community forums offering information about the 8.1-mill bond issue proposed for Mathews schools will be Tuesday at Neal Middle School, 3385 Youngstown-Kingsville Road, Fowler, and Oct. 19 and 28 at Mathews High School, 4429 Warren-Sharon Road.

All forums begin at 7 p.m.

The 37-year bond issue would pay off the $22.5 million — plus interest — that the district wants to borrow to build a grades K-12 building that would replace all four of the district’s current schools.
