Boardman romps; Yo. Christian falls
MASSILLON — Rob Boyd completed 16 of 21 passes for 235 yards as the Boardman High football team defeated Massillon Jackson, 44-7, to remain in the Federal League title hunt.
The game was decided on the ground. The Spartans (5-2, 3-1) rushed 26 times for 180 yards and three scores while the Polar Bears (0-7, 0-4) showed just 27 yards on 28 tries.
Nick Buonavolonta scored on carries of 5 and 21 yards and gained 67 yards on five carries. Boyd threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third.
Shadyside 43, Youngstown Christian 14
CANFIELD — Dylan Kimble passed for 242 yards as Shadyside (3-4) jumped out to a 30-0 lead in the second quarter.
Kimble threw a 48-yard score to Nate Schuetz and a 55-yarder to Ellis Brown for Shadyside’s first two scores.
For Youngstown Christian (3-4), Victor Shaw caught two touchdown passes from John Pecchia covering 43 and 26 yards. Pecchia led the Eagles with 78 yards rushing.
Southeast 14, Coventry 0
RAVENNA — Southeast earned its first win of the season by holding Coventry to 131 total yards.
Damian Pennington and Noah Kainrad scored touchdowns for the Pirates (1-6, 1-3 Portage Trail Conference Metro). Pennington gained 65 yards on five carries.
Coventry is 0-7, 0-4.
Southington 27, Ledgemont 12
SOUTHINGTON — Jimmy Rasey ran 52 times for 296 yards and four TDs to lead Southington (3-3), which scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Dan Larosa had 12 carries for 76 yards, three rushing TDs and an interception return for a TD to lead Ledgemont.
West Branch 28, Canton South 12
CANTON SOUTH — Mark Smith had two touchdowns and 166 yards as he brought West Branch (3-4, 2-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) out of Wildcat country victors. Canton South is 1-6, 0-4 in the NBC.
Smith has rushed for 1,093 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
West Branch came out of the gate quick, scoring 14 points in the first quarter.
Mark Smith started the scoring with a 1-yard run, and Bo Utley caught a 25 yard pass from Mike Smith to get the Warriors out to an early start. Mark Smith rushed for his second touchdown late in the third quarter, and Brenden Wells put the game out of reach with an 80-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Mohawk 26, Ellwood City 14
ELLWOOD CITY — Justin Upham ran 17 times for 116 yards and two TDs, including the game-clinching 74-yarder with 3:19 left, to lead Mohawk (3-3, 1-2 Midwestern-AA).
John Beatty completed 7 of 15 passes for 170 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His main target was Colin Bredl, who caught five passes for 105 yards and two scores. Josh Morrow had one big fourth-quarter catch for 60 yards.
Jared Feit carried three times for 99 yards and a TD for Ellwood City (0-6, 0-5), which lost its 30th straight game.
