Lowellville golf team qualifies for state meet


HARTVILLE — Lowellville finished runner-up to qualify for state during the Div. III boys district golf tournament at Seven Hills on Thursday.

Lowellville’s total of 341 trailed district winner Gilmour Academy, which had 325.

Junior Anthony Alfano was low for Lowellville with 79. Others were senior Mauro Amendola (83), senior Tyler Vitus (90) and junior Ray Carlson (89). The Rockets are coached by Tom Pilkington.

The district medalist was Gilmour’s Alex Andrews with 73.

Individual qualifiers were Eric Bowman of St. Thomas Aquinas with 78 and Josh Hettinger of Hillsdale with 80.

Division II tennis

BOARDMAN — Poland’s Danielle Mullis upset No. 3-seeded Victoria Ferry in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, in Thursday’s Division II sectional tennis quarterfinals, earning an automatic berth in next week’s district competition in Canton.

Poland’s Gabrielle Brocker, the tournament’s top seed, won her match to advance, joining Warren JFK teammates Chelsea Ross (the tournament’s second seed) and unseeded Gabby Lee, who also won quarterfinal matches.

Those four will play semifinals and finals matches Saturday for seeding purposes.

In doubles action, three of the top four seeds advanced.

Top-seeded Courtney Benson and Amy Noll of Poland and third-seeded Laurencia Lee and Claudia Ricott of JFK won quarters matches to advance.

They will play a semifinal match Saturday, joining unseeded Maddie Jones and Mallory Kohut (JFK) and second-seeded Jaclyn DiDomenico and Jordan Stefko (Mooney), who advanced earlier.
