Files sought in Ohio deputy's alleged cancer scam
MARION, Ohio (AP) — Investigators in central Ohio say they are having legal trouble obtaining medical records for a 39-year-old deputy who authorities say committed suicide after faking cancer and swindling friends and family.
Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey has said he would investigate whether the county can recoup any sick pay given Deputy Joe Russell, who shot and killed himself at his home on Sept. 30.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Al Hayden says investigators may consider requesting grand jury subpoenas to obtain information on claims Russell made to insurance companies. The prosecutor’s office is assisting.
Co-workers had donated more than 75 days in unused sick leave and vacation time to Russell since 2005. He also received $20,000 from a Fraternal Order of Police fundraiser in 2007.
