Mooney and JFK tennis teams advance to semis


Prep Tennis Semifinals

BOARDMAN — Four singles and two doubles matches will be played today to decide the semifinal field for Saturday’s competition in the Division II girls sectional tennis tournament.

Two doubles teams advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday with Warren JFK’s Maddie Jones and Mallory Kohut and Cardinal Mooney’s Jaclyn DiDomenico and Jordan Stefko posting quarterfinal wins.

Jones and Kohut defeated McDonald’s Melissa Wasser and Kellsie Foster 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, while DiDomenico and Stefko toppled Ravenna’s Kristen Zebroski and Megan Bell 6-1, 6-1. Those two winners will meet in one semifinal on Saturday.

The other semifinal will be determined today. In one quarterfinal match No. 1 seed Courtney Benson and Amy Noll of Poland will meet Cardinal Mooney’s Julie Matthews and Marcy Marlowe, while in the other quarterfinal matchup Warren JFK’s Lauren Lee and Claudia Ricotti will take on West Branch’s Julie and Rachel Ambelli.

Warren JFK will have three and Poland two in the singles quarterfinal action today. Poland’s Gabriele Brocker, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, will meet JFK’s Dana Nocera, while Danielle Mullis of the Bulldogs will take on No. 3 seed Victoria Ferry of Liberty. No. 2 seed Chelsea Ross of JFK meets Lakeview’s Jillian Hickey and the Eagles Gabby Lee takes on Crestview’s Megan Czuchra.

In Wednesday’s third round action Brocker defeated Megan Moore of McDonald 6-0, 6-0, while Nocera defeated Lordstown’s Allyson Ronghi 6-1, 6-3. Mullis defeated Rachel McGrail of Lordstown 6-0, 6-0 and Ferry also blanked Taylor Chiller of Crestview 6-0, 6-0.

Ross was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Stephanie Pogacnik of Poland and Lee took three sets to defeat No. 4 seeded Stephanie Schnarrs of Lakeview 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
