Trial is postponed
YOUNGSTOWN — The trial of a former Youngstown State University union president charged with menacing has been postponed until December or January.
Ivan Maldonado, 41, of Boardman, was to go on trial in Youngstown Municipal Court on Wednesday on the charge, but court officials said the case has been delayed. He is accused of making threatening comments to another member of the Association of Classified Employees union in March while he was still union president.
The university placed him on paid administrative leave in March and later fired him. The ACE union has filed grievances against the university regarding the firing.
Fire-safety day planned
BOARDMAN — The public is invited to a fire-safety day by the township fire department.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the main station, U.S. Route 224, people can tour the station, learn fire-safety tips, participate in interactive fire-extinguisher classes and receive free helmets, stickers and coloring books. Re-freshments will be provided.
Fire-department grants
YOUNGSTOWN — Three area volunteer fire departments have been awarded grant money from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The Winona and East Palestine Fire departments in Columbiana County and Gustavus Fire Department in Trumbull County have collectively received more than $7,500. The three departments were among 57 to receive the funding through the ODNR’s Division of Forestry.
The communities, each of which has fewer than 10,000 residents, are required to provide a local match to receive the funding. The money will go toward equipment, training and maintenance costs.
Learn CPR for infants
WARREN — An infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation class is offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Health Center, 667 Eastland Ave. S.E.
Bill Lovitz, a certified CPR instructor and respiratory therapist, will offer “Introduction to Infant Resuscitation: Basic Skills for New Parents,” using the American Heart Association-approved “Infant CPR Anytime” program.

Commissioners meeting
POLAND — Sons of the American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 is hosting the weekly meeting of the Mahoning County commissioners at 7 p.m. today at Legion Post 15 Home at 35 Cortland Ave.
The Sons of the American Legion is made of up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the military and became eligible for membership in the American Legion.

Ohio Senate Minority Leader Capri Cafaro of Liberty was to deliver a speech today at the United Nations in New York City. Cafaro, D-32nd, was to speak about advocacy and activism on behalf of older people on the International Day of Older Persons.
2 teens rob man, 56
YOUNGSTOWN — Police are looking for two teenage boys who robbed a 56-year-old man at gunpoint outside an East Side convenience store.
According to police, the South Truesdale Avenue man was coming out of the Shehy Avenue store at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday and heading to his car when two males approached, one holding a gun, and demanded money. The man handed over $29, and the thieves left in an older- model Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
