Poland girls going back to Div. II state golf event
CANTON — Poland’s girls golf team will be going back to the state tournament.
The Bulldogs, behind some outstanding play by Angela Molaskey and Maria Mancini, ran away with the team championship Tuesday at the Division II district tournament held at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course.
Poland is the defending state champion.
On Tuesday, Poland totaled 339 as Molaskey fired a 78 (39-39), while Mancini added a 79 (40-39) and the Bulldogs beat runner-up Hathaway Brown by 16 strokes.
The rest of the Bulldogs team included Allison Mitzel (89), Mariah Groner (93) and Meredith McKay (103).
The only other area player who will be advancing to the state tournament next week in Columbus is Warren JFK’s Kelsie Teaberry, who was one of three individuals not on a qualifying team to advance. Teaberry fired an 83.
The third qualifying team was Notre Dame Cathedral Latin with a 368 total. Cardinal Mooney was fifth at 387.
Div. I boys
HARTVILLE — Uniontown Lake, Massillon Jackson, Massillon Perry and Canton GlenOak were the top teams at the NEO Div. I boys sectional golf tournament at Seven Hills Golf Course on Tuesday.
Lake was low with 310, followed by Jackson and Perry (324 each) and GlenOak (327).
Lake senior Adam Wickham and Perry sophomore Spencer Lancaster were co-medalists with 73.
Individuals not on a qualifying team were: Ryan Headley (Marlington, 74); Kenny Earle (Massillon, 75); Jay Shingleton (Hoover, 80) and Justin Gunstein (Green, 80).
With 358, West Branch failed to qualify. The Warriors scoring were: Mickey Manser (86), Jeff Deckerd (87), Beau Taylor (89) and Drake Lohnes (96).
Div. II boys
RAVENNA — Champion’s Thomas Lydic had the third-best score behind medalist Grant Weaver of Waynedale at Windmill Lakes.
Weaver’s 72 was followed by Nich Blackburn’s 73 and Lydic’s 74. Weaver and Lydic were two of the three individuals not on a qualifying team to advance to next weekend’s state tournament at North Star Golf Resort in Sunbury.
Blackburn was on the roster of Lutheran West, the district champion with 307.
The third individual not on a qualifying team to advance to state was Alex King of Canal Fulton Northwest, also with 74 on the par-70 Windmill Lakes course.
No area team advanced as Hubbard was 12th with 336, Poland 13th (343), Ursuline 14th (343), Cardinal Mooney 15th (344) and Champion 16th (345).
