Gift to Beatitude House

YOUNGSTOWN — Beatitude House was awarded $20,000 from the Kennedy Family Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, in support of its $6 million campaign. This gift, a payment toward its $150,000 campaign commitment, will bring Beatitude House to 86 percent of its goal.

“The Kennedy Family Foundation’s generosity to our organization is truly remarkable,” explained Teresa Boyce, development director. “We are able to provide a second chance for a better life to more homeless women and children because of their support.”

Beatitude House provides disadvantaged women and children with the opportunity to transform their lives by creating homes, providing education and fostering healthy families. For information, call (330) 744-3147.

The Community Foundation is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes that assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Information about the foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org.

Missing man found

BOARDMAN — Police found a man who was missing from his Como Street, Struthers, home since Monday morning. Struthers and Boardman police found Christopher DeShields, 35, in the sewer system in Boardman on Thalia Avenue near Interstate 680. He was found at 11:19 p.m. Monday.

Police report they aren’t sure how he managed to get into the sewer system. The Boardman Fire Department pried the sewer open, and DeShields climbed up a ladder.

DeShields was last heard in his kitchen around 5 a.m. Monday. He left his car behind. Police said he has medical problems. A friend was able to finally reach DeShields on his cell phone, and he indicated he was “by a sewer,” police said. His cell-phone provider traced his location for police. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.
