Canfield aces the first day of sectional

Vindicator staff report

CANTON — Canfield’s top three singles players and top doubles team are all unbeaten through the first three rounds of the Division I girls sectional tennis tournament at Weis Park.

The Cardinals’ Stephanie Carrocce and Salena Nagy each won three matches and teammate Allison Pavlansky won two after advancing through the first round with a bye.

Carrocce dropped just six three games, Nagy dropped just six and Pavlansky nine as all three won in straight sets.

All are unseeded.

Boardman senior Carolyn Jesko, the tournament’s third seed, won her first two matches, dropping just one game, to advance to the fourth round.

Jesko was a state doubles qualifier last year while playing with her older sister Ann.

Eight players remain, including all four seeds.

The top four singles players and the top four doubles teams advance to next week’s district tournament at Oberlin College.

Canfield’s fourth-seeded doubles team of Gabrielle Brant and Paige Zwicker won two matches Tuesday at Stadium Park, winning the first match without dropping a set before edging Louisville’s top doubles team in three sets to advance to the fourth round.

Boardman’s No. 1 doubles team of Arina Kravitz and Lindsay Kirkan won their two matches in straight sets and will meet Brant and Zwicker in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

All four seeded doubles teams are still alive.

The tournament continues Saturday.
