Eugene Cumberbatch gets life sentence for his role in two April homicides in Warren
LIFE IN PRISON: Eugene Cumberbatch appeared in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court with his attorney, Joseph Fritz, to be sentenced for his role in the April 13 deaths of Lloyd McCoy Jr., 11, and Marvin Chaney, 26. Cumberbatch was sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 38 years.
WARREN — Eugene Cumberbatch said he didn’t kill anybody, especially 11-year-old Lloyd McCoy Jr., during a prepared speech before Judge Andrew Logan this morning at his sentencing.
Judge Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court handed Cumberbatch, 27, of Front Street Southwest, a sentence of life in prison with parole eligibility after 38 years for his role in the killing of McCoy and Marvin Chaney, 26.
The boy was visiting his sister at her house on Wick Street Southeast, when bullets ripped through the house, killing Chaney immediately and hitting McCoy in the back, puncturing his lungs and injuring other organs. He died about a week later.
Police said Cumberbatch fired one shot with a handgun, while Eugene Henderson, 25, of Pearl Street Southwest, fired about 25 more with an AK-47 assault rifle.
Henderson goes on trial Nov. 2.
