Canfield, Boardman girls advance


CORTLAND — The Canfield and Boardman high school girls golf teams advanced to the Division I district tournament by placing in the top four Monday at the sectional tournament at Tamer Win Golf Course.

Canfield finished second in the 11-team field with a 378 total, while the Spartans captured the fourth and final qualifying spot with a 403 score.

The only other local golfer who will be advancing to the district tournament on Oct. 13 at The Legends in Massillon will be Austintown Fitch High’s Shelby Kolat.

Kolat, who was one of four individuals not on a qualifying team to advance, shot a 95 to get the final individual spot.

Kenston, behind the play of tournament medalist Nicki Henry, took team top honors with a 368 total. Henry fired the low round of the tournament with a 79. Mentor was third with a 397 score.

Canfield was led by Whitney Graff with a 91, while the other four Cardinals were under 100, one of only two teams in the event to do so. The other was Kenston.

Boardman’s Devin Ferrell had the second lowest round of the tournament leading the Spartans with an 89.

Boys

VIENNA — Canfield’s Boo Timko and Warren Harding’s John Patterson were two individual qualifiers at the Div. I boys sectional golf tournament at Candywood Golf Course.

No area team was among the four team qualifiers for next week’s Div. I district tournament which will be Oct. 14 at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley.

Timko, a junior with the Cardinals, shared medalist honors for the tournament shooting an even-par 72.

Aurora, which won the team title with a 308 score, was led by Mitch Johnson, who also shot 72.

Patterson took the fourth individual qualifying spot for Harding with a 79.

Canfield, behind Timko, finished sixth place with a 326 total while Howland was eighth with 333.

Kent Roosevelt, Walsh Jesuit and Stow/Monroe Falls were the other three team qualifiers.
