Port, Ohio environmentalist wrangle over access

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland’s port agency says more time is needed to consider opening 88 acres of Lake Erie sediment landfill to public use, including hiking trails.

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority says the idea must be considered as part of an overall lakefront redevelopment plan and proposed $500 million port relocation.

Environmental groups wanted the agency to seek a $1 million state grant this year to make the landfill, now a wildlife refuge, accessible to the public. The state says a grant may be less likely next year.
