SWCD banquet, election

HANOVERTON — The Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual banquet and election will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at United Local High School.

A buffet swiss steak dinner will be served. A ticket is $11 and can be obtained by calling the Columbiana SWCD office in Salem at (330) 332-8732. The deadline for ordering tickets is Oct. 13. No tickets will be sold at the door.

One district supervisor will be elected at the annual meeting. Voting for the candidates will be from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.

The district’s activities will be reviewed and revised, and awards will be presented.

New Boardman bus

BOARDMAN — The school board approved the purchase of a $78,000 bus that will seat 60 passengers and include a wheel-chair lift.

The bus will be purchased from Myers Equipment Corporations Inc. of Canfield, and the money will come from federal stimulus money, said Kimberly Poma, board president.

The new bus will replace another that is about 15 years old, Poma said. The district will keep the old bus and have mechanic crews maintain it for field trips, she added.

Girard recycling drive

GIRARD — The Girard High School robotics team is sponsoring a recycling drive for printer, fax and copier ink cartridges.

Cartridges can be dropped off in the high school office only; pickup is not available.

Proceeds benefit the FIRST robotics team in Girard.

Chestnuts program

CORTLAND — Trumbull County Master Gardeners invites the public to a program about chestnuts Oct. 15.

“Chestnuts, Horse Chestnuts and Buckeyes” will be presented by Gordon D. Vujevic. The two-hour program will be at the Trumbull County Agricultural and Family Education Center, 520 W. Main St. Sign-in begins at 9:30 a.m.

Vujevic’s presentation will include a slide show and demonstration on how to shell a chestnut. He will discuss the differences between chestnuts, horse chestnuts and buckeyes.

Participants will have the opportunity to taste cream-of-chestnut soup and other foods.

Annual Witch Walk

BOARDMAN — Boardman High School’s art department will host the 32nd annual Witch Walk in the school hallways from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25.

A donation of $2 is suggested. Proceeds from the event benefit the Art Club and its various activities including the annual art show.

Attendees should enter through Door 8.

Sojourner House vigil

YOUNGSTOWN — In observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sojourner House Domestic Violence Program will have its annual candlelight vigil at noon today at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.

Several of the area’s victims of domestic violence will speak about their experiences and the services they received at Sojourner House.

There will be music and light refreshments.
