“Inventing LA: The Chandlers and Their Times” (9:30 p.m., PBS): Liev Schreiber narrates this fascinating documentary about the powerful Chandler family, who ran the Los Angeles Times for four generations beginning in the late 1800s. Produced by Emmy-winner Peter Jones, the film examines how the Chandlers wielded remarkable influence through their newspaper. In their pursuit of personal agendas and civic ideals, they built the city of the future, but also exposed the dark side of the American dream.

“Sherri” (7 p.m., Lifetime): Oh, what to name a new sitcom starring Sherri Shepherd? How about “Sherri”? She plays a newly single mother and aspiring actress trying to get on with her life after ditching a cheating husband. Malcolm-Jamal Warner also stars.

“CSI: Miami” (10 p.m., CBS): On “CSI: Miami,” Horatio and his team investigate when three volleyball players suddenly drop dead on the court. That can’t be a great advertisement for the sport.
