Poland captures sectional crown

HUBBARD — The Poland High girls golf team, the defending state champions, shot a 335 to win Thursday’s sectional golf tournament at Pine Lakes Golf Course.

Also qualifying for next week’s district tournament at Tam O’Shanter Hills & Dales in Canton were Mooney (367), Hubbard (398) and Warren JFK (401).

Leading Poland were Allison Mitizel (37-39—76), Maria Mancini (43-40—83), Mariah Groner (42-46—88), Angela Molaskey (42-46—88) and Meredith McKay (49-48—97).

Jackie Evans (45-39—84) paced Mooney, followed by Amber Bruno (47-44—91), Alyssa Culp (45-46—91), Kelly Murphy (50-51—101) and Haley Manuel (49-54—103).

Gina DePasquale (45-51—96) and Taylor Puncekar (46-50—96) led Hubbard, followed by Allie DeLuco (51-28—99), Abby Mills (51-56—107 and Mia Brown (55-55—110).

Warren JFK’s Kelsie Teaberry (39-36—75) was the medalist. Also for the Eagles were Gina Iacozili (51-47=98), Alina Baker (55-58=113), Katie Giardina (56-59=115) and Natalie Waldorf (57-62=119).

Jefferson Area’s Michelle Ford (39-41—80) was the top individual qualifier. Also moving on to next week’s competition are Ursuline’s Chase Connors (44-46—90), South Range’s Brittany Schneider (46-47—93) and Jackson-Milton’s Katie Santor (48-46—94).

Other schools competing were Southeast, Struthers, Lakeview, Champion, Salem and Lowellville.

Poland was 12-0 in dual match play and won the championship at the Copley Invitational.

The Bulldogs were runner-up at the JFK Invitational that was decided by a shootout.
