Mahoning Co. officials award Petersburg waterline project
Several Boardman streets will be repaved this fall.
staff report
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners have awarded the $1,159,212 Petersburg waterline-installation project to Rudzik Excavating of Struthers, the lowest of six bidders for the job.
Funding sources for the project, which will consist of about five miles of new pipe, are federal stimulus money, federal Community Development Block Grant, the Ohio Public Works Commission, Aqua Ohio, Springfield Township and the East Fairfield Coal Co.
Aqua Ohio will supply the water to about 200 households to be served by the new installation.
The project’s purpose is to eliminate dependence on water-supply wells contaminated by failed septic systems and by naturally occurring metals, especially iron, which causes staining of fixtures and clothing.
The commissioners also voted Thursday to advertise for bids for a new sanitary sewer for East Alliance and a sanitary-sewer extension on Summit Drive in Canfield.
The commissioners also awarded to the Shelly Co. of Thornville, Ohio, a $486,139 paving project in which the work is to be performed in the next 30 days.
The roads to be repaved include all of Brookwood Road, Shields Road between East Park Drive and Glenwood Avenue, and the northern part of Southern Boulevard in Boardman; Johnson Road from U.S. Route 62 to the Sebring Village limit; and part of Bedford Road in Coitsville Township.
The work is being funded by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant and gasoline tax and motor-vehicle-license-fee revenue from the county engineer’s office.
The commissioners heard Jim Petuch, county recycling director, announce a tire-recycling collection for county residents will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown.
The commissioners’ next meeting will be at 7 p.m. next Thursday at American Legion Post 15, 35 Courtland St., Poland.
