GM sales of Cobalts fall for September

General Motors said today that it sold 7,381 Chevrolet Cobalts last month, down 55 percent from the 16,521 sold in September 2008.

During the first nine months of this year, GM sold 85,885 Cobalts. That was down 47 percent from the 162,462 that were sold during the same period of 2008.

The car is produced at GM’s Lordstown complex.

Overall, GM’s U.S. sales were down 45 percent in September. It blamed much of the decline on the successful Cash for Clunkers program that ran in July and August. The discounts offered by the federal government persuaded many shoppers to buy cars during those months, rather than wait for fall, GM said.
