Winter clothing drive

LIBERTY — Winter clothing for the needy can be placed in barrels that are being set up at each Liberty school building, at the school bus garage, the Jewish Community Center and Temple El Emeth.

Warm coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and backpacks and all types of winter clothing will be accepted until February, or as long as there is a need.

The clothing will be distributed at Liberty Township Administration Building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. For more information call (330) 759-1315.

Cermonies for children planned in Ohio, Pa.

Compassionate Friends, a Pennsylvania/Ohio support group, invites area residents to participate in its annual Worldwide Candle Lighting Ceremony at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 in honor of children who died.

Ceremonies are planned in Austintown and in Sharpsville, Pa.

In Austintown, the event will take place at First Free Will Baptist Church, 5530 New Road.

In Sharpsville, Members of the Mercer County Chapter of Compassionate Friends invites bereaved families to its ceremony, part of a special service at Sharpsville First United Methodist Church, 148 E. Shenango St.

The Mercer County chapter meets at 7 p.m. the last Monday of each month (except December) at the new diagnostic center at Sharon Regional Hospital.

Historical society offers gifts for new members

SALEM — Salem Historical Society is offering a gift to anyone signing up for a membership until Jan 1.

Each new member will be given the choice of one of two sets of Christmas greeting cards or a copy of “John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859.”

The holiday cards were designed by local artists Lois Mountz and Sam Kirkland and are packaged in sets of 10.

Public is invited to bowl for a cure

NILES — Youngstown Wedding Ministers is inviting the public to bowl for a cure from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 12 in support of the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation.

Tickets will be $10 per person or $30 for a family pack of four tickets. Additional tickets can be purchased for $7 with a family pack.

Each ticket entitles the bearer to two games of cosmic bowling (shoe rental included), a slice of pizza, bag of potato chips and pop.

D.A.R. to collect articles for veterans

CANFIELD — Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mahoning Chapter, are asked to take CDs and white socks for veterans to the Dec. 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering. Sgt. Jim Conrad will speak on safety tips for women.

At the Nov. 9 meeting Dr. Anita Gorman spoke on Jane Austen, Peggy Oberholtzer gave the President General’s address, and the national defense report was presented by Joann Cook.

Recognized at the meeting was Nancy Finley, who has given American flags to new citizens for the past 20 years.

Brick sale nears end

CANFIELD — The Ursuline Center in Canfield will end its brick sale fundraiser on Jan. 1. Until then, the bricks will be sold for $20 each to raise funds for renovations to the swimming pool.

To date more than $10,000 has been raised from the sale of the commemorative bricks.
