steps to take Drive-through safety

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises restaurants be careful about the harmful effects of carbon monoxide from car exhaust:

Potential Hazard

Carbon monoxide inhibits the ability of the blood to absorb oxygen in the lungs.

Inhaling high levels and concentrations can lead to poisoning.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can result in headache, fatigue, flulike symptoms and potential heart problems.

Worker solutions

Keep the drive-through window closed as much as possible to limit exposure to car exhaust.

Employer Solutions

Provide adequate space and ventilation for both exterior and interior drive-through areas.

Use a reverse-flow fan system to prevent exhaust from entering the interior drive-through window area.

Rotate workers to minimize time spent stationed in the drive-through area.
