BOARDMAN — Throughout December, the American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter, 8392 Todd Ave., is offering free one-hour presentations of information about the H1N1 influenza virus on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. and evenings and weekends by request.

MRSA efforts recognized

FARRELL/GREENVILLE, Pa. — UPMC Horizon was recently recognized by Highmark’s QualityBlue Pay-for-Performance Program for its efforts in reducing and preventing Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) transmission and infection in Fiscal Year 2009.

The goal of the program was to implement process improvement strategies designed to prevent and reduce MRSA transmission and infection, including early recognition of at-risk patients, hand hygiene practices, education, contact isolation, patient-room cleaning, and adherence to mechanisms to measure and report the incidence of MRSA.

Volunteer effort planned

GREENFORD — On Dec. 14, Alzheimer’s Association Community Council members will meet to volunteer at the Big Reach Center of Hope, 11767 Lisbon Road.

Between 9 and 11a.m., council members will help make a difference in the lives of underserved individuals and families, and the public is invited to join them.

Performance awards

SHARON, Pa. — Unison Health Plan has presented Sharon Regional Health System with two Gold Star Quality Achievement awards, along with a $70,000 cash award, as part of Unison’s Gold Star pay for performance quality program.

The two awards recognize Sharon Regional’s achievement in reducing hospital-acquired infection rates and the performance of its Level II Nursery.

According to Unison, Sharon Regional is the only hospital in Mercer, Lawrence, Butler and Crawford counties to earn the dual Gold Star status.

Doctor relocation

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Dr. Robert Brown, of Horizon Physiatry-UPMC, will relocate his office from the Womancare Center to Parkside Orthopedics, 1599 N. Hermitage Road, effective Dec. 9.

Adoption month celebrated

WARREN — Northeast Ohio Adoption Services, (NOAS), is celebrating National Adoption Awareness Month with photo and informational displays in churches and shopping areas.

The national theme is “Answering the Call — You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. There are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you.”

NOAS does not charge fees for adoption and offers free classes for adoptive families, who may be either singles or couples.

Daybreak breaks ground

YOUNGSTOWN — Daybreak, a 10-bed residential crisis shelter for youth 11 to 18 operated by Family Service Agency, has broken ground for an expansion that will provide residents more space for dining, recreation and will increase office space to allow family counseling sessions.

MAMMOVAN visit

LIBERTY — The American Cancer Society Liberty Wal-Mart Relay For Life team will have the MAMMOVAN, Breast Care Center’s mobile mammography unit, at the new Wal-Mart at 200 Goldie Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

Inside the van are private changing rooms, and female technologists perform the mammogram.

An appointment isn’t necessary.

However, women should bring the full name, address and telephone phone number of their physician, a prescription for the exam from their physician, and their medical insurance card and information.

If a woman is without medical insurance or is under insured, the American Cancer Society BEST (Breast, Education, Screening, Together) program is available to help pay the cost.

Guidelines to determine if women are eligible for the free mammogram will be determined at registration.
