Romanian-born pianist to perform at Bliss Hall
YOUNGSTOWN — The Dana School of Music will present a performance by Romanian born pianist Maira Liliestedt at 8 p.m. Dec. 1 in Bliss Recital Hall, on the Youngstown State University campus.
The repertoire will include selections from Mozart, Piazzolla and Liszt.
Liliestedt was a prizewinner in national and international competitions in Romania before moving to the United States in 1992.
Currently an assistant professor of music at Mount Union College, Liliestedt previously taught at Northern Kentucky University, the College of Mount Saint Joseph, and in the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s evening program.
The concert is free and open to the public.
White House reporter to speak at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN — WYSU-FM will host NPR White House reporter Don Gonyea on Dec. 3 in the DeBartolo Stadium Club in Stambaugh Stadium, on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Gonyea has been the White House correspondent since 2000 and reporting for NPR News since 1986. He is a regular substitute on “Morning Edition” and has been a contributor to the BBC, CBC and AP Radio. In 2000, he earned broadcasting’s highest award, the George Foster Peabody Award, for “Lost & Found Sound,” a series on “All Things Considered.”
Tickets are $55 for premium admission (pre-event meet-and-greet, dinner and lecture), $30 for WYSU members for the dinner and lecture, and $40 for nonmembers for the dinner and lecture. The reception will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m.

Filmmaker to discuss making crime dramas
BOARDMAN — Art Byrd will speak at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boardman Public Library, 7680 Glenwood Ave., on “Filming the Crime Drama.” Byrd, a filmmaker and photojournalist for WFMJ Channel 21, will discuss how working as a newsman helped him in writing crime screenplays. He will describe his writing style and research techniques, and show clips from two of his crime dramas.
CSI: Y’town is a group sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County. It is open to readers, writers and fans of murder mysteries, cozies, whodunits, detective fiction, historical mysteries, psychological thrillers, suspense fiction, police procedurals, supernatural thrillers, crime capers or other mystery genres.

Fierstein to replace Topol in ‘Fiddler’
CLEVELAND — Harvey Fierstein will replace Chaim Topol in the North American tour of the Tony-Award winning musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” which comes to Playhouse Square June 15-27, 2010, for 16 performances.
Topol informed the show’s producers he would have to leave the production due to a shoulder injury requiring emergency long-term treatment.
Fierstein starred as the milkman, Tevye, in the recent critically acclaimed Broadway production.
He has has won four Tony awards.
