NC State 66, Akron 45

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — North Carolina State coach Sidney Lowe couldn’t help being impressed by his team’s start. Tracy Smith had 16 points and 11 rebounds as North Carolina State beat Akron at the Glenn Wilkes Classic on Friday. Dennis Horner also scored 16 points for the Wolfpack (2-0), who took control early and built a 43-21 halftime lead. The Zips (0-2) got 10 points from Anthony Hitchens. Akron shot just 30.9 percent from the field (17 of 55). Horner had five points, including a 3, and C.J. Williams hit a pair of jumpers as N.C. State jumped out to a 17-4 lead 6 minutes into the game.

Louisiana Tech 74, Miami (Ohio) 62

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Kyle Gibson scored 27 to lead four Louisiana Tech players in double figures as the Bulldogs came away with a victory over Miami of Ohio in the opening game of the Basketball Travelers World Vision Classic. Julian Mavunga had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Redhawks (0-3), who didn’t give him much help offensively. Olu Ashaolu had a double-double for Louisiana Tech (2-0).

Northern Illinois 85, Tennessee State 57

DE KALB, Ill. — Sean Kowal hit a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace Northern Illinois. Tony Nixon added 16 points and Mike DiNunno 11 for the Huskies (1-2), and guard Darion “Jake” Anderson had a career-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points and six assists. Jacquan Nobles led Tennessee State (0-2) with a game-high 21 points, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Darius Cox scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Citadel 63, Eastern Michigan 56

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Cameron Wells scored 24 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead The Citadel in the first round of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge at Missouri State University. The Citadel (2-1) led through most of the game including 26-22 at halftime. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 45-37 with 9:47 left with Wells scoring 8 in the first 10:03 of the second half.
