Lessons and carols

YOUNGSTOWN — St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., will present the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols at 7 p.m. Nov. 29.

The Cathedral Choir, directed by Dr. Daniel Laginya, will showcase seasonal music of North American origin, including colonial anthems, Appalachian carols and black spirituals.

A reception will follow in the Cathedral Hall.

Final service

STRUTHERS — Struthers Baptist Tabernacle, 305 Elm St., will celebrate almost 80 years of ministry and its final Sunday as an organized congregation during a service at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 29. There will be communion.

Lunch will follow at noon. Anyone attending is welcome to contribute a side dish, as chicken will be provided.

There will be a celebration service at 1:30 p.m. in recognition of the church history.

Choir performance

BELOIT — Beloit Evangelical Friends Church, 18042 Fifth St., will host the Malone University Women’s Concert Choir at its 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

The choir consists of 25 selected singers.

An offering will be taken to help fund the choir travel next spring.

Special liturgy

YOUNGSTOWN — Guys Without Ties will participate in a Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill St.

The group will bring a contemporary flavor to a Mass celebrating the Feast of Christ the King, which marks the end of the Catholic Church’s liturgical year.

The band will perform with the church choir directed by interim music director Roni Sue Gregory.

The service will feature a range of instruments not generally associated with religious services. Chris Eldridge will perform on the keyboard and horns; Russ Parish, guitar; Jim Bickley, drums; Mark Vollmer, trombone; Tom Bartholomew, saxophone; Bill Hrusovsky on trumpet, and Dale Janus on bass.

Guys Without Ties will be joined by parishioner Tom Mastromico, who will perform a trumpet solo of “Ave Maria” in memory of his mother.

The service will feature a blend of contemporary and traditional hymns, ranging from “Canticle of the Sun” to “Crown Him with Many Crowns.”

Family and friends day

YOUNGSTOWN — The annual family and friends day is planned at 6 p.m. Sunday at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 161 Early Road.

Guest speaker will be Pastor Maurice Tucker of Jehovah’s House of Prayer Church of God in Christ in Campbell.

Choir anniversary

YOUNGSTOWN — Phillips Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, 1407 Victor Ave., will mark the anniversary of the New Generation choir at 4 p.m. Nov. 29.

Other church choirs, soloists, praise dancers and mimes are invited to participate.

New church

YOUNGSTOWN — John W. Jackson is pastor of a new church, the Word of Life Church of God in Christ, 2969 Carbone St. His wife, Gloria L. Jackson, is missionary.

Sunday school is at 9:45 a.m. and worship at 11:30 a.m. Sundays, prayer is at noon and 6 p.m. Mondays, Bible study is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and evangelistic service at 7:30 p.m. Fridays.

Special event

BOARDMAN — The Davidic Army of God Ministry with director, the Rev. Marion C. Masters, will present Davidic teaching and Hebrew praise and worship with song, dance, shofars, flags, Davidic harps and a full-size replica of the Ark of the Covenant during a program from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Western Reserve Community Church, 8590 Hitchcock Road.

Catholic Workers

YOUNGSTOWN — Dorothy Day Youngstown Catholic Workers will have an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 620 Belmont Ave.

The Catholic Worker movement was founded in 1932 on the basis of hospitality, so area residents are invited to stop and have a neighborly chat.

The movement is focused on feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting those in prison and helping people in general.

Special gathering

NORTH JACKSON — A CD release party for the praise band, Tangled Harmony, is planned at 6 p.m. today at First Federated Church, 10786 Mahoning Ave.

Judy Haines-Hricik volunteered four years ago to form a praise band for a start-up contemporary worship service at the church. The self-taught musician is now a published composer as the praise band has recorded several of her original compositions.

The band’s new CD “ We Rejoice” is available.

Rededication set

HUBBARD — First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard, 22 Westview Ave., will rededicate its sanctuary during its worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday, which is 50 years after the original dedication.

The service will replicate the original one by using the same anthems, hymns and Scripture readings. At the service, 45 people who have been members for 50 years or more will be honored. Heading the list of honorees will be Clara Mansel, a member for 85 years.

Appreciation program

YOUNGSTOWN — The women of Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., will host an appreciation program for Pastor Harold Logan at 4 p.m. today.

Program participants will be minister Lois Butler of Triedstone Baptist Church, minister Ruth Parker of Fellowship Baptist Church, Grace Moore of Greater Liberty Baptist Church, minister Rita Jordan of Pentecostal House of Prayer, evangelist Barbara Martin of the Salvation Army and Lisa Williams of St. Peter’s Baptist Church and Ruby Brown.
