YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will showcase the Arms Family Museum this December with an exhibition entitled Holiday in Motion, which opens Dec. 5 and runs through Jan. 10.
The seven first-floor period rooms of the museum, originally the Arms family home, will be decorated with artifacts from the Historical Society’s collections, along with hundreds of items on loan from private individuals. Items will include working Lionel Train displays, animated German tick-tock figures; a vintage nativity set and other religious artifacts; a room full of Santa Claus figures in various forms dating back to the mid-1800s; and 1950’s era Christmas trees with period lighting and hundreds of Shiny Brite and Plakie Twinkler ornaments.
A companion exhibit on the museum’s second floor will showcase model trains as well as historical photographs of locomotives. Activities and crafts for children will be available in the Anne Kilcawley Christman Hands-On History Room throughout the month.
Regular museum hours are 1-5 p.m.Tuesday-Sunday (closed Mondays); with extended hours on Dec. 5 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The museum will also stay open until 8 p.m. on Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.
Admission for Holiday in Motion is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens (60 and over), and $2 for children (3 and under, free). A reduced admission of $1 will be offered on opening weekend, Dec. 5-6.
A preview party will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 4. The cost is $15 for MVHS members and $18 for guests. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. For reservations, call (330) 743-2589.
