Sentencing for cop killer delayed in Akron

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Sentencing for the admitted killer of a police officer in northeast Ohio has been delayed while he gets new attorneys for the fifth time.

The Akron sentencing hearing for 25-year-old Ashford Lamar Thompson had been scheduled for today. His two-member legal defense team quit and says they cannot represent him effectively.

Thompson could face the death penalty in the 2008 shooting death of 33-year-old Twinsburg police officer Joshua Miktarian.

Thompson apparently complained last week that he was not properly informed of his constitutional rights before his guilty plea. One of his most recent attorneys says that’s false.

A judge has issued a gag order barring attorneys from publicly discussing the case.
