Fairhaven Foundation’s calendar art show

HOWLAND — The Fairhaven Foundation will have its annual calendar art show in the Grand Ballroom at Avalon Inn, 9519 E. Market St., from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today.

Proceeds will benefit the Fairhaven Foundation.

The show celebrates the creativity and imagination of individuals with developmental disabilities. It features artists at work, live entertainment, light appetizers, a bake sale, Chinese auction, P. Buckley Moss print raffle calendars, notecards, Christmas cards (from original artwork by people with developmental disabilities) and ornaments for sale.

Admission costs $10 for adults and $7 for students.

Heating assistance available in Valley

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning-Youngstown Community Action Partnership continues scheduling appointments for the Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program through its Interactive Voice Response system.

Emergency HEAP provides assistance to low-income households that have had utility service terminated, face the threat of disconnection or have less than a 25 percent supply of bulk fuel.

Potential applicants must call (866) 223-1125 to make an appointment before coming in to complete an application.

A maximum one-time payment of $175 per heating season is available; bulk-fuel households are eligible for up to $600. Customers using coal/wood are eligible for up to $350.

Emergency HEAP applicants must report their total household income for the past three months for all members 18 or older at the interview. Customers must bring both current gas and electric bills to their appointment.

Applications may be picked up at the MYCAP office, 101 E. Federal St., Suite 200, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Churches, organizations or agencies needing a supply of applications are urged to call the office at (330) 747-7921, ext. 1128.

4-H canine club

STRUTHERS — Steel Valley K-9’s, a dog-related 4-H group, is having its first meeting of the year Saturday at Becker Family Center at Spring Street and Poland Avenue.

Steel Valley K-9’s 4-H group accepts members age 5 to 8 into its Cloverbud program. Any member who is at least 8 and in the third grade can join the 4-H program, which teaches dogs basic obedience, agility and rally obedience.

Man shot in robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — A West Judson Avenue man was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center after suffering a gunshot wound to his left hand in a robbery at his girlfriend’s home.

Shane Johnson, 40, was at his girlfriend’s Martin Luther King Boulevard apartment around 7 p.m. Wednesday when a man the couple knows asked them for money.

The woman told him they had no money, and he left but returned a short time later, asking for money again.

Johnson told him they didn’t have any, and the man pulled out a gun and fired.

The woman ran out of the apartment to call for help. The man fired again, and Johnson ran into the bedroom to get away. The man left the apartment.

Block-watch meeting

YOUNGSTOWN — There will be a Powerstown Neighbors Snoop Block Watch meeting at 7 tonight at Fairview Outreach and Performing Arts Center, 4220 Youngstown-Poland Road.
