Austintown man held in sister’s stabbing

AUSTINTOWN — A township man was arrested after his sister was stabbed. James McCarthy, 30, of North Redgate Lane, was charged Monday with felonious assault.

The 33-year-old victim told police she was watching television at their home about 10:30 p.m. Monday when McCarthy came in with a knife and threatened to kill her. She said she ran into the kitchen and was cornered. When the victim reached for a chair to defend herself, McCarthy stabbed her in the elbow, according to a police report.

She told police he then took the knife and ran into a bedroom. Police arrived at the home and took McCarthy into custody.

The victim refused medical treatment at the scene but said she would drive herself to the hospital.

McCarthy was taken to the Mahoning County jail and then to St. Elizabeth Health Center for evaluation.

Volunteers help Kaluzas prepare for move

YOUNGSTOWN — Beatitude House Green Clean volunteers went to Joe Kaluza’s current home on Ivanhoe Avenue on Tuesday to help the family prepare for its upcoming move. Jennifer Roberts, development associate, said the volunteers spent about an hour cleaning up outside the home as well as cleaning and organizing inside.

Kaluza, former manager of KFC on South Avenue, was paralyzed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair after he was shot while taking a deposit to the bank. Kaluza’s sister Anna Fitzgerald and family friend Jim Phillips coordinated a fund-raising campaign to build the family a new house, and seven area businessmen are handling the construction.

The new home also is on Ivanhoe Avenue, just five houses from Kaluza’s current residence. Construction began Sept. 30, and the family is expected to move into the new home Dec. 13.
