Big ten roundup\ Saturday’s other games
Northwestern 17, No. 8 Iowa 10
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Dan Persa threw a touchdown pass and Marshall Thomas recovered a fumble for another touchdown, and Northwestern snapped Iowa’s 13-game winning streak. It was the first win over a top-10 opponent for the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) since knocking off then-No. 6 Ohio State 33-27 in overtime in 2004. Iowa lost quarterback Ricky Stanzi to an apparent ankle injury early in the second quarter. Freshman James Vandenberg was just 9 of 27 for 82 yards filling, and couldn’t lead the Hawkeyes (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten) to any points after Stanzi left the game. Northwestern scored twice off turnovers in the second quarter. Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone after the hit that knocked Stanzi out of the game, and Drake Dunsmore caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Persa after another turnover. Brandon Wegher had 63 yards rushing for Iowa, whose national title hopes are all but over. The Hawkeyes can still win at least a share of the Big Ten title with victories over Ohio State and Minnesota in their final two games.
Purdue 38, Michigan 36
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Joey Elliott threw for a career-high 367 yards and two touchdowns, ran for a score and Purdue. The Boilermakers (4-6, 3-3 Big Ten) trailed by two TDs at halftime and rallied to end their 11-game road losing streak by winning at Michigan Stadium for the first time since 1966. Michigan melted down in the third quarter again, allowing Purdue to score three touchdowns, including one after an onside kick caught the Wolverines by surprise. In danger of missing a bowl after a 4-0 start, Michigan had a chance to tie after Brandon Minor’s third TD with 2:10 left, but Tate Forcier was sacked on a 2-point conversion that Michigan was forced to attempt because of a missed extra point. After Purdue recovered the onside kick, Michigan forced a punt, but went almost nowhere from its own 10, ending the game in a flurry of laterals.
No. 24 Wisconsin 31, Indiana 28
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — John Clay ran for 134 yards and a touchdown, Montee Ball scored two TDs and Wisconsin held off Indiana. Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) ran for 294 yards and won its second straight. Indiana (4-6, 1-5) has lost three in a row and six of seven.
Illinois 35, Minnesota 32
MINNEAPOLIS — Terry Hawthorne returned an interception for a touchdown and Clay Nurse had four of Illinois’ eight sacks to lead the Illini. Jacob Charest threw for 185 yards and a touchdown after replacing Juice Williams, who left in the first quarter with an injured left ankle.
Michigan St. 49, W. Michigan 14
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Little-used Ashton Leggett ran for 110 yards and four touchdowns and Kirk Cousins threw for two scores to lead Michigan State. Leggett’s first carry of the game — and second of the season — was a 71-yard TD run.
